Long Live The Queen - Oliver's Modern American

A close up of a plate of food with scallops and rice on a table.

Located on McDowell road, a historic Polynesian-Style Dairy Queen has been transformed into a lounge where you can relax with some good drinks and food with friends.

Oliver's Modern American has a great range of drinks and food that are a must try!

During my visit, I tried a few of their cocktails. "The Queen", an ode to the Dairy Queen, where this location now stands, and a Smokey Old Fashioned that came with a fun table side smoke show. I'm a whiskey lover, so the smokey old fashioned was perfect for me. If you like your drinks on the sweeter side, "The Queen" is right up your alley! There's also other classics like their espresso martini and unique options like an apricot whiskey sour. You will also find some local pints to enjoy and an extensive wine list to take advantage of.

I love how the menu shows that their chefs have taken inspiration from a range of cuisines to create dishes that are unique and delicious, but also seem somewhat familiar. The shared dishes you will find different skewers, burrata and a roasted vegetable flatbread that I loved. Instead of a traditional tomato sauce, the flatbread has Muhammara (a spicy red pepper dip) that served as a nice base to the flatbread and gave it some nice heat. It was my first time trying something like that and I really enjoyed it.

For the main dishes, there's a wide range to choose from. Seafood, chicken, pastas, and steaks, you will find something for everyone. The New York Strip was cooked to perfection and has a delicious coffee rub, which is a perfect combo for steak. Served with some large broccolini and a cauliflower puree, a simple "steak and potato" dish that has been elevated with finesse and flavors. The other dish I tried was the Coconut Lime Scallops. If you looked at the picture above, you will see that beautiful crust that has been created on those scallops. Served in a bowl of succotash with some coconut cream, this dish is filling, but also eats light and refreshing.

Now you always have to save room for dessert and while Oliver's currently offers one dessert option, it is a great option. A strawberry shortcake that is a must try. Fluffy biscuits, house-made whipped cream, topped with fresh strawberries and a generous amount of lemon zest, this is not your average shortcake. The biscuit gives the dish a nice crunch, while the other flavors are all light and refreshing, it's a great dessert to end the meal.

Overall, in my opinion, this is definitely a great spot to visit. The staff here is really nice and are always available to help with your needs. There are some large couches and fire pits outside that would make for a perfect spot to hang with a few friends (just not when it's 115 degrees in the summer).
